Radford rowers flying the flag at the NSW State Championships

From: Vicky Spencer, Director of Rowing

Crew briefingsOn 8/9th February, over 60 Radford rowers travelled to Penrith to compete in the NSW State Championships, held at Sydney International Rowing Centre. Over the course of the three-day regatta, the Radford crews showed an incredible determination and positivity, while enduring torrential rain and wind. We held our own in tough racing against some of the top school crews in the country, and represented the team well in a top-level regatta, which is also a qualification event for Australia’s elite rowers contesting seats in the 2020 Olympic boats.

Unfortunately, due to deteriorating weather conditions, the regatta was called off early on Sunday, however the overall attitude remained impressively positive and we managed to reload the trailer in record-breaking time, with all athletes pitching in.

Coxed Quad bronze medal winners

Congratulations to the Schoolboy Coxed Quad of Damien Schroder, Sam Roberts, Will Gregory, Harrison Lonsdale and coxswain Ben Heatley, for excellent racing and ultimately achieving a bronze medal in their event.

Captain of Boats, Damien Schroder, also achieved a silver medal in the U21 Men’s Lightweight Single Scull, racing against older and more experienced athletes in a very competitive division.

A massive ‘thank you’ to our incredible coaches, who endured the pouring rain, race delays, soggy rowers, and managed multiple races and crews throughout the day.

Our parent volunteers, and the efforts of Friends of Radford Rowing (FORR), should be acknowledged for the food and support they provided to the rowers over the weekend.

Despite the challenges, the NSW State Championships was a fantastic experience, and only highlights the increasing strength of the Radford Rowing program in 2020.
