Service learning: SIDS and Kids light display

Author: Kath Notley, Head of Year 12

During the holidays, a group of nine Year 12 students answered the call of their Head of Year to assist SIDS and Kids ACT to dismantle and pack away their Guinness World Records lights display.

SIDS for Kids light display dismantling

The display featured over 1.8 million LED lights and was located in the Canberra City Centre from late November until New Year's Eve. On January 7, the first day of the dismantling, the students worked at an impressive rate to carefully dismantle the fragile installation displays and then set about removing over 30,000 cable ties holding the lights.

The students' impressive efforts throughout the day were acknowledged by both SIDS and Kids ACT and the other volunteers who were in attendance. By the end of the day, the students had an intimate understanding of the various light strand constructions and the techniques needed to store hundreds of thousands of lights into packing crates!
