Heywire workshop at Radford

By Ailsa Mackerras, IBDP CAS Coordinator

Students in Years 10–12 recently had the opportunity to participate in a workshop offered by local ABC producer Katie McAllister, aimed at helping them get started on an entry to the ABC Heywire Competition.

Heywire is a storytelling competition open to young people living in regional or rural Australia, which includes Canberra. Radford has had a winner in the past, Kia Handley (Class of 2006), who went on to become a morning radio presenter at ABC Newcastle.

Katie spent a lunch time with a small group of enthusiastic students, inspiring ideas for possible stories they could share in their entry. The students heard past winning entries, discussed them, and did lots of writing. Our students even had the chance to record vox pops for ABC local radio, in which they shared some perspectives on living in Canberra. You can listen to these vox pops below.

You can still enter the competition if you didn’t attend the workshop. Come and chat to Ailsa Mackerras in the English Department if you’re interested and further details about entering can be found here.
