Hispanic Day

By Yarami Ramos-Gomez and Sophie Manoharan, Spanish Team

On Friday, 16 September, our Junior School celebrated its inaugural Hispanic Day.

The school was a sea of colour as students wore colours representing the flags of Spanish-speaking countries. This served as a warm welcome to representatives of the embassies of Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Spain, Guatemala, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

  • During the opening ceremony, Kindergarten students recited a collective poem.
  • Year 1 performed a flamenco dance and Year 2 explained the origins of Maya Temple and built a Mayan temple from egg cartons decorated with Mayan patterns.
  • Our students from Kindergarten to Year 2 participated in salsa, bachata, and merengue dance lessons, while Year 3 to Year 6 students enjoyed an array of hands-on activities and learned more about the culture of the visiting countries.
  • Year 3 learned about the Venezuelan climate and nature and used coloured plasticine to create a cascade landscape. They also tried a delicious Venezuelan treat with pawpaw jam.
  • Year 4 enjoyed decorating piñatas but enjoyed hitting them and getting the goodies from inside the piñatas even more!
  • Year 5 learned to play the claves to Cuban rhythms, such as guaguancó and son. They also learned to dance salsa the Cuban way and tried the beloved Cuban treat, pastelitos de guayaba (guava pastries). They also watched a presentation on Uruguayan food and loved making the delicious Uruguayan sweets, alfajores and trufas.
  • Year 6 also got their hands into food! They enjoyed learning about Colombian food and making (and eating!) the traditional Colombian obleas (wafers). They also participated in a workshop to learn greetings in Quechua, one of the indigenous languages of Peru. Finally, they saw a display of traditional Peruvian dresses and ate some delicious treats from the land of the Incas!
