Languages and Literature Week

By Michele Sharp, Head of Languages and Susan Davenport Head of Library and Information Services

The inaugural combined Languages Week and Book Week was a huge success last week, with students and staff taking part in a number of activities each day.

We started the week off with our creative day, when defending champions Willsy Tierney and Rameena Qureshi once again took out first prize in the Lego and art competitions. It was lovely to see Ariadna Iskhakova take on board the literature theme, with her cake design based on ‘Wings of Fire’

On Tuesday, Year 10 Spanish classes were visited by the Uruguayan Ambassador, Señora Dianela Pi, who gave an informative presentation answering questions ranging from what school was like in Uruguay to traditional foods. We are very grateful to Ms Pi for being so generous with her time, our students certainly have a much broader knowledge of her country and an understanding of our similarities as nations. The dress-up Costume Day saw students and staff representing their favourite literary characters or coming dressed in national costumes. At lunchtime, the Library filled with students eager to engage with Language learning activities such as playing with and making traditional toys, experiencing the performing art of mime, trying their hand at calligraphy, or taking their chance to throw a tomato in Radford’s own mini version of La Tomatina festival.

Throughout the week, students participated in week-long Library activities and competitions, with congratulations to winners Connor Dugard and Tiia Priest-Willimott. Our Canteen treated us to a bespoke menu that tied in literature, languages, and cuisine.

Overall, our students were active participants in engaging with Languages and/or Literature through the various activities offered. Our thanks go to the Languages, Library, and Canteen staff for making this a memorable week for everyone and to our Languages Captains.
