Omo Wewe – African Drumming

Under the tutelage of Mrs Sarah Whiley, the Omo Wewe group has finished its second year in the College’ co-curricular music program. Omo Wewe means children drumming – drums have been a large part of African culture. Drums (djembes) are played in times of peace and war, planting and harvesting, birth and death. Our student musicians have and continue to learn rhythms at our rehearsals on Friday mornings that can be heard pulsing through the College.

We encourage and welcome new members in 2022.

I really enjoyed Omo Wewe because it was a new and fun experience for me. I loved learning new rhythms and playing on the drums.
Siyara – Year 4

In Omo Wewe, I really enjoyed just contributing to the songs. I loved how each rhythm had its own story and I liked learning more about the drum itself and the different ways you can bang it. It has been a super fun part of the day and I always look forward to arriving and learning something new.
Eleanor Wardle – Year 5

I recently have joined the Omo Wewe African Drumming group. Ever since, I have never been more happy to be in a co-curricular here at Radford. I absolutely love its culture and passion that each one of us shares into our music. I have made so many friends, and they are all welcoming to new people, and teach us how to do drums. We all also appreciate sharing the African culture, as it is so special and unique, and everyone should listen to these rhythms. As the rhythms are so unique, they all have their own beautiful meaning. This makes the music even more culturally connected. I definitely believe you should join.
Zara Hezkial – Year 5

I joined Omo Wewe in 2021 and I found that I am very passionate about African Drumming. All of the different drumming rhythms have their own story and meaning behind it and every time we play a rhythm I remember the story and feel proud to be playing that story out to others. I like how each rhythm is unique in its own way. Sometimes they are different by culture and they are very special. In the end I really enjoyed being a part of Omo Wewe this year and I am looking forward to doing it again next year. I’m hoping for more people to join.
