Australian Sports Foundation Pollies Relay – Radford Representatives
During week 1 of the school holidays, senior students from Radford participated in the ASF Pollie Relay Dash. A huge shout out to Patrick Walker, Claudia Kendall, Hamish Roberts, Ellen Mihaljevic, Nikita Crabb, Curtis Garrett and Robin Foster for giving back to such a great event.

Even a wet Canberra morning did not dampen enthusiasm. The event was all about fun and participation in sport and physical activity, and it highlights the growing importance of philanthropy in sport. Our students teamed up with ASF Board member and Olympic rowing champion, Kim Brennan, Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games marathon champion, Jess Stensen, and two-time Commonwealth Games men’s marathon champion Michael Shelley as well as Radford parents, Hon Dr Andrew Leigh MP and Brett Cartwright to run the 400m relay event.

Radford Sport supports the fantastic efforts of the Australian Sports Foundation. The ASF helps athletes, sporting clubs and organisations fundraise. The ASF is the only organisation in Australia to have Deductible Gift Recipient status for sport. This means any donation to an athlete, sporting club or organisation of $2 or more is tax-deductible.

Radford Sport has 2 programs already set up with ASF to receive donations, with the plan of registering more sports programs.

Our Rowers learn about water safety
The 2022-23 Radford rowing pre-season camps were held during the second week of the school holidays, with almost 100 rowers and coxes from Year 6-11 taking part. The camps are designed to help the shed progressively return to training, reconnect with their teammates, and start preparing for the season ahead.

A key activity for the camps included a Water Safety session at CISAC. All squads spent several hours learning about survival techniques in the water (especially if they capsize a boat), rescues, and they also completed a clothed swim assessment.

An aquatic sport like rowing does present an element of risk, therefore it is important for any Radford student participating in rowing to be able to swim competently, and to be educated on the risks, and on the actions and behaviours that are required to have a safe and enjoyable season.
