Student achievement: Oliver Johnstone

From Nick Akhurst, Head of Co-curricular Drama

The Iain Sinclair award is an annual award given to the student who has achieved the highest standard of characterisation during a production. Each production nominates one person, and then the directors of the various productions and other member of the school performing arts community vote for the winner.

Iain is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) Masters programme and a Queen’s Trust scholar. Iain travelled to the UK and USA as a Churchill Fellow to study dramaturgy in 2003. Since his return from London, he has worked with a number of local theatre companies, directing productions and creating original works.

He has directed work all over Australia, working with companies such as Company B Belvoir, STC, LaMama and MTC.

This year’s winner was Oliver Johnstone, for his role in The Real Inspector Hound. This is a challenging role for any actor, and he performed with flair and precision. This performance was made more challenging by the COVID-19 lockdown, which necessitated having to rehearse online and then perform a comedy without an audience.

We wish him all the best in his future performances.
