Y1 at zoo & aquarium

From Melinda Hamilton, Year 1 Teacher

Year 1 recently enjoyed a full day excursion to the National Zoo & Aquarium, to support their inquiry into ‘Sharing the Planet’. We were very fortunate to enjoy beautiful sunny weather and the chance to explore the entire Zoo, from the Aquarium to the playground.

Students were particularly interested in learning more about the different habitats animals live in, and were quite worried about the number of animals that are classified as endangered. We’re sure to see a lot of action related to these new discoveries in the coming weeks.

  • The best thing was seeing the meerkats because they were looking all around and looking for food and water. I felt so happy seeing all the animals. Zoe
  • The best thing was everything! It was so much fun. We saw lemurs and a Tasmanian Devil that was running around in circles. I wrote down all the animals we saw in my notepad and most were endangered. Hannah
  • The best thing was seeing all the animals. We saw giraffe eating hay and Zoo keepers feeding seals. Riley
  • I liked playing on the playground. I played with friends and the big slide was lots of fun. The coolest animal was the rhino. I know the difference between the females and males, the boy has horns. Lucas
  • We saw the little penguins in their home. It must have been too cold for them to be swimming today! We also watched lions moving around their home. They were very sleepy… Pranavi
