Y5/6 AFL Gala Day

Boys Y5/6 AFL Gala Day
Off to the Canberra Cup, with our winning Girls team

By Jon Craddock and Dean O’Brien

On Monday 23 May, nearly 60 Radford students from Years 5 and 6, represented the college in the Jack Steele and Hannah Dunne Cup. This is an AFL carnival for boys and girls in Years 5 and 6 who compete against other Belconnen schools.

Radford College was fortunate enough to enter three teams, with each being very successful on the day. The girls’ team was undefeated and one of the boys’ teams was also victorious in their grand final, after a hard fight. These two teams will proceed to Canberra Cup in August.

It was terrific to see the students who attended very excited to play AFL for the first time, or to play alongside their friends and not against them. The students competed against other Belconnen schools, and the winners will now proceed to an all ACT affair in the Canberra Cup. The top team from that carnival will then have an opportunity to play at the SCG later this year, against schools from around NSW.

Coaches Jon Craddock, Dean O’Brien and Angus Walker are incredibly very proud of how the students conducted themselves. It was a pleasure to watch each of the students play with great spirit and sportsmanship on the day, encouraging each other and coming together as a team.
