Year 1 classes visit the Barton Grocer

By Melinda Hamilton, Year 1 Teacher

This year students in Year 1 explored ‘How We Organise Ourselves’ which involved exploring how food journeys from the paddock to our plates.

A fantastic excursion we all look forward to is our visit to the Barton Grocer, owned by the Costanzo family. We were very disappointed when our original plans were cancelled due to lockdown, but so excited to be able to visit in the final weeks of term!

At the Barton Grocer students undertook three activities. Mickey and his dad, Dom, guided students around the store, showing them how the stock arrives in the loading dock and the systems in place for customers to select it from the shelf and purchase it. Another activity was exploring the shelves and purchasing some items, and the most delicious activity was ordering a cinnamon donut and hot chocolate from the café, watching these being made before eating them for morning tea.

Thanks so much, Dom and Kylie, for hosting our visits and helping us learn about how supermarkets help people meet their needs!

Laasya – We got to have a donut and hot chocolate for morning tea. We all lined up and paid our money and then got to eat!

Anderson – We got to see the security camera in the back office. We could see other kids in 1MH in the shop!

Rykaa – Miss Hamilton had a shopping list and we helped find the food and buy it. At the checkout, Mickey served us and scanned the items. Caitlin got to collect the change.
