Year 1 Fruit Shops

By Melinda Hamilton, Year 1 Teacher

In Term 3 Week 10, each Year 1 class had the opportunity to practise their money skills by purchasing their fruit break from their class Grocer each day.

Students have been learning the value of coins and how to add them together, so choosing an item from the class fruit shop and counting out the right money to pay for it has been great practice!

The class Grocer also tied in really well with investigations into How We Organise Ourselves which explored the systems designed to meet our needs.

What a fun way to finish off the term!

Student reflections:

  • Anthony – I liked working in the shop. I had to count the money and give change.
  • Flynn – My job was to put the watermelon onto the plate for the customers.
  • Harper – It was hard to choose what fruit to buy as there was lots of good ones! The kiwi fruits sold out on the first day!
  • Tilly – Working in the shop was so much fun, getting the fruit and putting the money in the cash register.
