Year 1 takes action

By Melinda Hamilton, Year 1 Teacher

Year 1 has been exploring ‘How We Organise Ourselves’ and learning about the systems designed to meet our needs. This has involved investigating the journey food takes from the paddock to our plate. We have also looked at some issues or problems with these systems including:

  • milk “wars” – payment of dairy farmers by large supermarkets
  • plastic packaging – reducing the items we purchase wrapped in plastic
  • free range vs cage-laid eggs
  • importance of Fair Trade to support cacao farmers
  • destruction of bees and the impact on food production
  • food waste and how we can help prevent it.

Students displayed great engagement and passion for these issues. They chose one to pursue further and act on it. Students wrote letters, created posters and even videos to communicate their message to a wider audience.

Two students chose to write an article for the bulletin to share their action message with the Radford community.

Fair Trade chocolate

Dear Radford community

I have discovered that the people who make chocolate are not being paid enough. I thought if we work together we can help them.

First, if you go to the shop and you are buying chocolate can you buy Fair Trade chocolate please? If we live a happy life eating chocolate, the farmers should too! We want them to get money for life savings so they can live a happy life. I know this is emotional, but if you could help, that would be great.

The Fair Trade symbol has a blue and yellow side with a person in the middle. If you want to buy chocolate, get it with the Fair Trade symbol on it. I hope you can help me and the cacao farmers by buying Fair Trade.

Caged hens or free-range
Caged hens or free-range

Dear Radford College

Did you know that chickens are getting stuck in cages?

Please don’t buy caged eggs. It is bad because it is a horrible life inside a cage. What if you were in a small cage, laying an egg every day. How would you feel?

This is how you can help: always buy free range eggs, never buy cage eggs.

Thank you, Radford College.
