Year 1 classes have been looking forward all year to their visit to the Barton Grocer.

As part of our investigations into ‘How We Organise Ourselves’, students have been exploring systems that are designed to meet needs. This involves finding out about how food comes from the paddock to our plates. The Year 1 visits to Tatum Farm earlier this year looked at the source of food, and this trip to Barton Grocer gave students the chance to learn about how the store works, from the back dock to the checkout.

Dom and Kylie, owners of Barton Grocer, showed us all around, including the ‘staff only’ behind-the-scenes areas. Students brought $2 and purchased a cinnamon donut and a hot chocolate or freshly squeezed orange juice from the café. Students also had the opportunity to help shop for items needed in upcoming cooking in class.

We’re so grateful for the invitation to explore a real shop, and the chance to practise our money skills with real-life shopping!

  • Aidan – My favourite part was seeing 1MH on the security camera in the staff only part of the store.
  • Tilly – The cinnamon donuts were sooo yummy. We got to go to the counter and order our morning tea.
  • Flynn – It was fun scanning the food items at the checkouts. It made a beep sound.
  • Harper – We got to push the little trolley around the shop and buy ingredients to make pizza.
  • Zoe – The bus ride to the Barton Grocer was lots of fun. My grandpa drove the bus!
  • Miriam – When we left, Dom gave us all a heart chocolate. We had so much fun at the Barton Grocer!
