Year 1 visits the zoo

By Melinda Hamilton, Year 1 Teacher

On Friday, Year 1 spent the day at the zoo, exploring animals and their habitats, as part of our investigations into ‘Sharing the Planet’.

While the weather threatened rain, luckily it didn’t arrive, and everyone enjoyed seeing the many animals. The guided tours with a zoo keeper allowed students the opportunity to pat a corn snake, feed an emu and deer, and learn about many animals and how humans need to help protect their habitats from being destroyed.

Student reflections

Nicha – The best part of the day was the icy pole we got at the end! I loved seeing the penguins who were so cute swimming in the water. The meerkats were also fun to watch as they were looking all around for predators. It was the best day ever!

Nicholas – I liked the tigers as they like to fight and play. The otters had webbed feet and dived down under the water. We watched them swim through the water with their sleek fur. We learnt about terrestrial, aquatic and arboreal habitats.

Jonathan – I liked playing at the playground, especially the spinning wheel. My favourite animals were the cheetahs as they were sitting on the roof in their area. They have spots and golden yellow fur. The zoo was a fun place to visit!
