We Walk Inclusion
But it takes work
We Walk Inclusion

I love moving around Radford, and interacting with our students, staff and families.
It is why my vocation called to me. I was led to work in schools. They are relational places and the conversations I have remind me of why I have such a passion for my job.
Radford is a progressive, innovative, and lively learning community of young people, with equally diverse guiding adults. We pride ourselves on our sense of belonging.
But . . . I have learnt that creating a culture of belonging takes work.
I wonder if, as families, we have taken the time to have a conversation with our young friends about the concept of inclusion. It is never OK to make fun of someone for their height, their weight, their skin colour, their appearance, their demeanour, the contents of their lunchbox, or the model of car their family drives.
Sometimes we hear “they’re different” used as an insult. At Radford, we say “how awesome are they, that they are different.”
No-one knows what the person standing in front of them is going through. But if we lean into our Radford Ethos, we remind ourselves to:
• See Again
• Listen Deeply
• Act with Kindness
Today many of our students immersed themselves in RadPAC – the Radford Performing Arts Carnival.
It is a significant event on the College calendar.
The only division is defined by what House you are in. Beyond that, everyone is invited to find their space. To belong.
I cherish this day. RadPAC represents inclusion. We don’t just talk it, we walk it. I was honoured to be on the judging panel, and I can tell you that it was difficult to choose a winner.
Today, everyone was a winner.
Go well and include everyone.
Andy
The gift that keeps on giving
Being attuned to God's gift of Creation
The gift that keeps on giving

One of my greatest joys each day is coming home to Sunshine, our pet dog. Fellow dog owners will be familiar with the act of being enthusiastically greeted at the door by their pet. Regardless of being away for 5 months, 5 days or 5 minutes, I find Sunshine’s greeting one of pure love and excitement. I have to admit to wishing my teenage sons sometimes shared the same excitement! The interactions we have with animals leaves me in wonder about the connections we humans share with animals.
This week is National Science Week with the theme for schools of ‘Species Survival.’ I personally love this theme. Being increasingly attuned to God’s gift of creation since holidaying in Africa over 20 years ago, I am ever more concerned about how we collectively engage in God’s gift of being responsible for caring for animals. This may be as simple as cleaning the environment immediately surrounding us to supporting organisations like the World Wildlife Fund.
The Bible provides many references to animals. We are all familiar with God creating all creatures in the Genesis creation story. There are many times too where we can look to the passages to help us understand that God’s gift of creatures is meant to be a continual blessing to our lives — where they provide for us, and we can learn from animals in ways that perhaps we don’t consider.
In the wisdom of the Proverbs, the writer informs the reader that someone who is righteous, cares for the needs of animals and also how we can learn from the actions of ants! In one of the passages that help provide me with perspective, Jesus points to how we can learn from birds not to “worry about things” because God will provide for us. Just as science reveals to us, the Bible shows the symmetry between the connected relationship of humankind and the animal world.
There is a such a unique beauty to animals that we can all enjoy. On the recent Central Australia trip, we visited the Alice Springs Desert Park. There, I found animals I never knew existed, like the Australian Bustard. We even got the opportunity to watch how eagles hunt their prey. These interactions leave me in awe and wonder about God’s seemingly never-ending gift of Creation.
A Prayer for Wildlife
Dear God,
As I look around at the world you have created, I am filled with awe and wonder at the diversity of life you have placed on this planet. From the smallest insect to the largest mammal, every creature has a place in your grand design, and I am grateful for the beauty and richness that they bring to our world.
But Lord, I am also aware that many of these creatures are in danger. Their habitats are being destroyed by deforestation, and their lives are threatened by the changes that are happening to our planet as a result of climate change. I pray for the protection of these animals and their habitats. I pray for the wisdom and compassion to make the changes we need to make to protect their homes.
Lord, I know that these creatures are not just important to us, but they are also important to you. You have created each one with care and intention, and you have given us the responsibility to care for them as stewards of your creation. Help us to be faithful in this task, and to act with wisdom, kindness, and love towards all your creatures.
I pray this prayer in the name of Jesus Christ, who taught us to love and care for all of your creation.
Amen
Go in Peace,
Rev. Andy

During Week 3, both the Year 11/12 Girls and Boys Rugby 7s teams competed at the ACT and Southern NSW Rugby 7s Finals at Southwell Park.
The Radford Year 11/12 boys were undefeated throughout the day, scoring a plethora of tries and proving their formidable defence in stopping their opposition. Huge congratulations to the Year 11/12 Boys for being crowned the ACT and Southern NSW Champions!
The Year 11/12 Girls represented the College with grit and determination. Well done girls on finishing in 3rd place at the regional finals!
ASC Netball
On Tuesday 6 August, Radford netballers represented the College at the ASC Netball Championships. Competing in the Years 7/8, Years 9/10 and Years 11/12 divisions, each team showed their class and skill against quality opponents. All teams had some fantastic wins during the day.
Congratulations to the Radford Years 9/10 team for finishing in 3rd place — Radford’s best ever result at ASC Netball!
Futsal
Weeks 2 and 3 saw the Years 5/6, Years 9/10 and Years 11/12 Capital Football School Futsal Cup gala days with all students representing Radford proudly. The Years 9/10 Boys and Girls team made it to the semi-finals, and the Year 6 Boys team were unfortunately defeated in their Grand Final after playing beautiful Futsal throughout the day. Special mention to the Year 5 Boys team who fought hard to draw level in their quarter-final after being down 3-0 at half time. Unfortunately, the much more physically stronger opposition took out the game 4 –3 in the last minute.

Susan Ryan honoured
Instrumental in Radford's establishment
Susan Ryan honoured

Senator Susan Ryan AO was a trail-blazing parliamentarian. She was the first female senator for the ACT and the first female Federal Labour minister. On 1 August of this year, a new statue was unveiled in the Senate Rose Garden at Old Parliament House. It was unveiled on the 40th anniversary of the Sex Discrimination Act, an Act which Senator Ryan was instrumental in steering through Parliament.
Senator Ryan is also intrinsically linked with Radford College. She was part of the Hawke Labour government that came into power on 5 March 1983. Three days prior, with the uncertainty about picket lines at the construction site and the debate over funding, Bob Hawke had stated that “We will ensure that the school is built. Decisions in regard to those matters will be made by government. Institutions, whether they be trade unions or others who want to talk to us about the areas of education or so on, will have the opportunity of speaking to us. They won’t be making the unilateral decisions about what happens in this country”.
When the government changed, Senator Ryan took up the Education Portfolio. With it, she inherited the complicated dispute between the unions and the supporters of Radford College. She managed to get the construction ban lifted after meeting with Trades and Labour Council and Australian Teachers Federation representatives and made assurances regarding resourcing, facilities, and funding for Government education in the ACT. This led to the establishment of a committee to review the development of Radford College and to advise, among other things, on how disruptive effects could be avoided. In May, Senator Ryan outlined the Labour government’s commitment to provide $803,000 for Stage One of Radford College, a sum that had been promised by the previous government. As a consequence of her involvement, T.B. Millar invited her to the laying of the foundation stone and to speak at the event.
Senator Susan Ryan's legacy has impacted both Australian politics and education. She played a pivotal role in establishing Radford College and her contribution to politics has now been recognised by the ACT Government in the recent installation of her sculpture.

Learning how to stay safe online
Kindy Kids meet Kenny Koala

Radford College Kindergarten students enjoyed a visit from Constable Kenny Koala who shared with them how to be safe online.
Kenny talked about 3 important rules to ensure they are safe when using an iPad, computer or a parent's phone.
1. Ask permission when we do something new.
2. Stay close to a grown up.
3. Never talk to anyone online that you haven’t met in real life.
A highlight of the day was visiting Kenny’s Police car where students were reminded about the importance of sitting in the back of the car in a child seat. We then heard the siren which was really loud!
Kindergarten students and staff look forward to welcoming Kenny back for another visit in Term 4 to learn more about safety in the community.
