A Life-Changing Exchange

By Jeb Jeffery, Year 10

During my five-week exchange to Markham College in Lima, Peru, I had an incredible experience that has left a lasting impact on my life. Not only did my Spanish skills improve significantly, but the friendships I formed with my host family and fellow students taught me invaluable lessons.

The inclusivity and rich culture of the Peruvian people at Markham College were truly remarkable. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed and embraced by everyone. People approached me, genuinely interested in how I was enjoying their beautiful country. The cultural differences, such as greeting the opposite gender with a kiss on the cheek and referring to friends' parents as "Tío y/o Tía" (uncle and/or auntie), showcased their collective and loving society. It is the people and their culture that I will miss the most.

If you are a football (soccer) enthusiast, Peru is the perfect place for you! During lunchtime and breaks, people would gather to play the sport. One striking example of their inclusivity occurred when a few students from my year group were playing together, and some Year 7s spontaneously joined in without hesitation. The unity at the school was amazing.

The bond I formed with my exchange partner is indescribable. I was lucky to be paired up with a similar person to me. I can't wait for him to come to Radford, so I can show him around, just as he did for me in Peru. Taking the risk of going on this exchange is undoubtedly one of the best decisions I have ever made. To all the students and parents reading this, I highly encourage you to embark on your own exchange journey.
