ACT Sports Competitions Update #4

By Megan Fritsch, Head of Sport

Following the release of the ACT Government’s Pathway Forward, Radford Sport wishes to provide the following update to parents regarding sport in the ACT.

Next Step in ACT Pathway brought forward by two weeks

With 95% of the ACT’s eligible population, more than 370,000 adults and teenagers, fully vaccinated, the Chief Minister announced on 9 November that the next stage of the ACT’s Pathway Forward has been brought forward to 11:59pm on Thursday, 11 November 2021.

With community sport making a welcome recommencement over recent weeks, with many thousands of Canberrans returning to the courts, gyms and fields, capacity and group size restrictions have remained in place during this time. This announcement will significantly further lift restrictions relevant to community sport, recreation, fitness, dance and martial arts.

What does this mean for Radford Sport?

  • Density limits are removed for outdoor sports, including pools, with a maximum of 2000 people permitted across an entire site.
  • Up to 25 people can gather in any indoor space, and if over 25, the density limit of one person per 2 sqm applies (up to 2000).
  • Restrictions on class sizes for group fitness, dance and martial arts are removed, with capacity limited only by the indoor space density limits (one person per 2 sqm)
  • Face masks are no longer mandatory in indoor sport settings; however, schools are still deemed high-risk settings. Therefore, we will be encouraging the wearing of masks inside Radford Sports facilities and in crowded settings.
  • Co-curricular Sport pick-up arrangements will remain the same. At the conclusion of each training session, coaches and/or supervising teachers will walk the students to the following areas:
  • All students in grades K–4 are to be collected from JS Pick & Go
  • All students in grades 5–6 are to be collected from the Turning Circle
  • Students in grades 7–12 are to be collected from College Street or can make their own way home

Note – students are not to be collected from outside the G.Wigg Sports Centre due to the major works currently taking place.

  • We will also continue to urge students, families, volunteers, and external providers to use hand sanitiser and stay at home when unwell.
  • All visitors accessing Radford Sport facilities are still required to use Check In CBR when arriving on campus.

The Chief Minister has indicated that these baseline measures are anticipated to remain in place over the Christmas period and will be reviewed in late January 2022.

It is great to see Radford student-athletes back playing in basketball, cricket, futsal, tennis and water polo competitions, and working hard in the summer sport co-curricular activities such as athletics, K-2 FMS, golf, Girls Make Your Move, rowing and taekwondo.

The Radford Sports Team would like to thank all students, families and the broader Radford community for their ongoing patience, flexibility and support. This has meant that we have been able to resume sport and physical activity on campus with relative ease.
