Ethics Olympiad
From Nick Ewbank, Head of History, Philosophy and RaVE
On 4 May, two teams of Radford students, one of Year 11 and 12 Philosophy students, and one of Year 10 students, participated in the ACT Ethics Olympiad, held over Zoom.
Ethics Olympiads are opportunities for students to collaborative and competitively discuss real-life and timely ethical dilemmas. Students are not assigned positions to argue (unlike debating), but are asked to defend their positions on various issues. Ethics Olympiads promote ethical awareness, critical thinking skills, civil discourse, international engagement, and an appreciation of diverse points of view. Hence, they align with Radford’s emphasis on critical and creative thinking. Some of the issues discussed on the day included K-Pop and Tiger King.
The students enjoyed participating and said it was an enjoyable and thought-provoking experience.
The Radford teams were:
Years 11/12
- Hannah Depta
- Beth Armstrong
- Darcy Wiseman
- Imogen Eynon-Cooke
- James Dixon
Year 10
- Terry
- Ria
- Iris
- Aurora
- Holly
Thanks to Mr Mitchell, for organising, and Mrs Clayton, for her coaching on the day.
There will be another opportunity for students to participate in a Philosothon later in the year; if interested, please speak to Mr Bailey (in English).
