Green & Gold Day

By Faye Robertson, JS HPE Teacher and Sports Program Manager

Every “even” week during the school term, students in the Junior School (K–6) participate in a program that is organised and facilitated by the school Sports Department. The program provides a variety of experiences from a range of different sports. Throughout the year, students in each year group can explore and investigate a large scope of diverse skill sets, from developing communication skills to being a ‘risk-taker’ in discovering new and unfamiliar environments and settings.

Each class might have a slightly different experience or collection of allocated sports, however, the intention and learning behind the practices are consistent and are often new and stimulating. A good example: in Year 5, students will experience ‘Cheer’, a sport steeped in gymnastic elements, rhythmical movement and teamwork.

For the first ‘Friday Sport’ of Term 3, students in the Junior School donned green and gold in the support of our Australian athletes currently competing at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. It was excellent to see our students being ‘Bold in Gold,’ proudly supporting the multi-sport event. The day was filled with an extra-special golden sparkle, as our students participated in their various sports with a little more vigour, excitement, and dynamism.

Could it be possible that amongst our Junior School community, we might be fostering the next generation of athletes to be ‘Bold in Gold?’ We currently have a Radford Collegian, Jessie Wagstaff, representing Australia in the Men's 3 x 3 Basketball Tournament. The Radford Junior School were wearing the Australian colours with pride in supporting all athletes, but particularly Jessie!

Enjoy some photos from the day!
