Junior School Book Week Parade

By Gemma Wilson, Teacher-Librarian

The Junior School Book Week Parade 2022 was another great success. We had nursery rhyme characters and fairy tale characters. We had characters from CBCA-nominated books. We had characters inspired by class novels – so much diversity and breadth of creative thinking about characters.

Book Week Parades don’t happen without the support of students and families embracing it. For some families, Book Week can create a sense of dread about how to dress up your child, or how to create something from the “dress-up box”. As I discussed with Year 5 and Year 6 students, this event may not be your favourite event, but it is a favourite event for others. It is important for our school culture that we all participate and support, even if it challenges us.

I often refer to the book All the Ways to Be Smart by Davina Bell. It talks about how smart can look like cleverness, creativeness, kindness, emotional awareness and teamwork. Some students love swimming carnivals and running events, others don’t. For some students, the theatre productions, chess competitions or dance eisteddfods are their way to show smart. For many, Book Week is a chance to show their creativity and love of literature and dress up creatively for Book Week, as their way to show smart.

As a IB Primary Years Programme school, one of our core Learner Profile Attributes is to be a risk-taker. Yes, we might feel challenged or uncomfortable. Yes, we might not like dressing up. Does this create an opportunity to push ourselves and build our resilience? Just as we cheer loudly at carnivals and appreciate our talented musicians, we need to show our support of other students’ creativity at Book Week. Thank you for supporting your child to build our reading culture at Radford.

As we were only able to celebrate Book Week virtually last year, it was a real pleasure to come together and celebrate our love of books and reading. We hope you enjoy some more photos of the event.
