Radford's journey to reconciliation
By Mr Christopher Bradbury, Principal
This week marks a profoundly significant occasion: National Reconciliation Day. This is not merely a date on a calendar, it is a vital moment in our nation's ongoing journey towards truth, justice and genuine unity. It calls upon each of us to reflect deeply on our shared histories, our present realities, and the future we aspire to build together.
The theme for this year, Bridging Now to Next, resonates deeply with the spirit of our College. It encapsulates the dynamic process of reconciliation – a journey that demands we confront the uncomfortable truths of the past, fully understand the present landscape of First Nations experiences, and then, crucially, build the pathways that lead to a more just, equitable and compassionate future. It's about moving from awareness to action, from reflection to enduring change. It speaks to the active construction of a better tomorrow, rooted firmly in the lessons of today.
At Radford College, we believe that education is fundamentally about preparing young people to be informed, empathetic and responsible global citizens. This mission is incomplete without a deep and abiding commitment to reconciliation. It is with great enthusiasm, therefore, that I share with you our journey in developing Radford College’s very first Reconciliation Action Plan.
This RAP is far more than just a document; it is an exciting, tangible opportunity for our College to solidify its commitment to reconciliation and to embed respect for Indigenous Australians in every fibre of our school community. It is a living, breathing framework that will guide our actions, shape our curriculum, inform our relationships, and strengthen our collective understanding.
A RAP is a commitment to fostering a culture where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures, and contributions are not just acknowledged, but deeply valued, understood, and celebrated.
Our RAP will focus on practical actions within three key pillars:
Relationships: We will strengthen connections with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, fostering genuine partnerships built on trust and mutual understanding. This means listening actively, learning humbly and engaging respectfully.
Respect: We commit to embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives across our curriculum, celebrating culture and challenging racism. It is about understanding the richness and diversity of First Nations cultures, languages and spiritualties.
Opportunities: We will seek to create equitable outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and staff, supporting their aspirations and celebrating their achievements. This involves creating pathways for success and ensuring an inclusive and welcoming environment for all.
This journey of developing our RAP has been a deeply enriching and profoundly collaborative experience. It has been shaped by the diverse voices within our own Radford family – the insights and wisdom of our staff, the thoughtful perspectives and powerful enthusiasm of our students, and the commitment and guidance of our parents. I would like to extend my gratitude to those parents who were involved in the consultation process. We value your significant contribution to the process.
We are pleased to announce that the launch of our Reconciliation Action Plan will take place on Wednesday, 22 October in the Collegians Centre.
This collective engagement ensures that our RAP is not merely a top-down initiative, but a genuine expression of our shared values and a reflection of our whole community’s commitment. This is what makes it truly ours, and truly meaningful.
As we look to the theme Bridging Now to Next, let us recognise that reconciliation is an ongoing process – a continuous commitment to learning, listening and acting. It asks us to walk together, side by side, with open hearts and open minds.
May this National Reconciliation Day be a powerful catalyst for each of us to deepen our understanding, strengthen our resolve, and actively contribute to a reconciled Australia – one where justice, equity and respect are lived realities for all.
