Readers Cup 2021

By Gemma Wilson, Junior School Teacher Librarian

The annual Readers Cup competition has been held, albeit in virtual form. Like all events, it was affected by our lockdown. Books were shared via contactless collection during lockdown and plenty of reading of ebooks occurred.

Readers Cup is a national competition for students in Years 5 and 6. Five book titles are provided, and each student needs to read all five books. This means that students need to read books outside of their comfort zone or titles they would not normally select. It encourages them to read more broadly and to be open-minded.

Our virtual quiz consisted of five rounds of questions, with each round having two questions on each book. The readers needed to know the books in great detail, as the questions were very particular and long.

Often surprises happen, and the most popular title this year was Ice Wolves, the first book in the Elementals series. This book has been flying off the library shelves this year but usually only selected by fantasy lovers. It was great to see it so popular amongst all the students.

Radford had three teams of students which shows the depth of reading love amongst our Junior School students. We look forward to continuing our participation in this next year.

The five books this year were:

  • Secrets of a Schoolyard Millionaire by Nat Amoore
  • Ice Wolves by Amie Kaufman
  • Toffle Towers: Fully Booked by Tim Harris and James Foley
  • Lizard's Tale by Weng Wai Chan
  • Vincent and the Grandest Hotel on Earth by Lisa Nicol.
