Rowing ACT Winter Time Trial Series

Radford College represented at all five of the Rowing ACT Winter Time Trials and achieved outstanding results across the series.

Introduced by Mark Kwiatkowski in the mid-1980s, the time trials provide a great opportunity for students to develop, compete and have fun. It is notoriously difficult to win due to the mysteries of handicapping, but caters to all rowing levels. Mark Kwiatkowski is still actively coaching at Canberra Rowing Club and continues to support junior development in the territory.

From results over the series, Hamish McKee (Year 11) finished on top of the men’s point score. Hamish's victory in the Kwiatkowski Cup was well-deserved and terrific.

Other notable results in the men's competition included Radford scullers Charlie Knight (Year 9, second place), Angus Scott (Year 11, fourth place), Hamish Gaden (Year 11, sixth place), Rohan White (Year 11, seventh place) and William Fraser (Year 8, tenth place) joining Hamish in the top ten.

In the women’s competition, Zara Turner (Year 10) won the women’s point score with a strong result in the last time trial. This was a fantastic series win for Zara who will be awarded the Lyn Cirulis Plate.

The late Lyn Cirulis was a stalwart of Canberra Rowing Club and an absolute character of the rowing scene in Canberra. Lyn also played a pivotal role with club administration, fundraising and provided legal advice over many decades.

We can all be justifiably proud of not only Hamish and Zara, but also of everyone who took part in the series and represented Radford College so well.

Sporting Achievements

Congratulations to Ruben Seow (Year 8) and Molly Jones (Year 8) who were selected by Water Polo ACT to compete at the Water Polo NSW 2023 State Festival at Sydney Olympic Park from 3-6 October. Unfortunately, the girls competition was cancelled due to a lack of entries. However, Ruben’s team placed fourth overall and out of 11 teams - a great result!

Two Radford basketball players were recently crowned Best and Fairest for their respective age groups at Basketball ACT’s 2023 Junior Awards Night. Josh Brinkley (Year 6, competing in the Under 12s) and Aarav Kochhar (Year 8, competing in the U14s) had phenomenal seasons, averaging more than 20 points per game. Madi Scholfield (Year 9) and Kanyi Menakaya (Year 10) should also receive honourable mentions for being nominated Most Valuable Players in the U16 age group.

Become a Ball Kid

Tennis ACT is seeking expressions of interest for ball kids aged 12-18 at Canberra International 2024. This is a wonderful opportunity for ball kids to experience the Canberra International, which will be held at the Canberra Tennis Centre from 31 December to 6 January.

Australian Schools Orienteering Championships

Radford orienteers, who were part of the ACT Team, produced outstanding results at the Australian Schools Orienteering Championships (ASOC). The team travelled across the country to Western Australia during the holidays. The courses were tough, and the heat was on!

Radford orienteers included Aoife Rothery (Year 11), Mia Kluth (Year 11), Max Johnson (Year 11), Katherine Maundrell (Year 10), Matty Maundrell (Year 8), Ariadna Iskhakova (Year 8) and Sanda Halpin (Year 9).

Notable results for Radford included:

ASOC Sprint

• Junior Girls U16 - first place - Ariadna Iskhakova
• Junior Boys U16 - seventh place - Matty Maundrell
• Senior Girls 16+ - sixth place - Katherine Maundrell
• Senior Girls 16+ - ninth place - Aoife Rothery

ASOC Long

• Junior Girls U16 - seventh place - Ariadna Iskhakova
• Junior Boys U16 - seventh place - Matty Maundrell

ASOC Relay

• Junior Girls U16 - first place - ACT Team, including Ariadna Iskhakova
• Junior Boys U16 - first place - ACT Team, including Matty Maundrell
• Senior Girls 16+ - third place - ACT Team, including Mia Kluth and Aoife Rothery

Furthermore, Ariadna was named in the All-Australian Honours Team in the Junior Girls U16s category. Overall, Radford students contributed significantly to bringing the ACT Team home in a strong third position - only one point behind Queensland in second place.

Combined with ASOC was the Australian Orienteering Championships, which is another series of competitions in different areas, using different maps, with age classes aligned to the international competition.

• Men's 14 - second place - Matty Maundrell

Australian Sprint Distance

• Women's 14 - third place - Ariadna Iskhakova
• Men's 14 - seventh place - Matty Maundrell
• Women's 16 - fifth place - Katherine Maundrell

Canberra Independent Schools Basketball Competition

The Canberra Independent Schools Basketball Competition (CISBC) brings together independent schools from around the ACT, including Radford College, Daramalan College, Canberra Grammar School, and Burgmann Anglican School.

Radford will host Round One of the competition in the G. Wigg Sports Centre on Thursday, 12 October.

Here's what attendees can expect:

• Basketball fixtures: the College's top basketball athletes competing in four shortened fixtures, using the Elam Ending format.
• Three-point shooting contest: there will be a contest in which representatives from each school will compete in a three-point shooting contest for competition points.
• Canteen: a canteen will be available offering burgers, sausages, lollies, and drinks for sale.
• DJ: Collegian Will Taylor will DJ the event, providing music and entertainment.
• UC Capitals players: Women's National Basketball League players from the UC Capitals will be present. They will be signing autographs, taking selfies, and giving away tickets and merchandise.
