U18 Rugby Report – Saturday 14 May
Radford 7 – Daramalan 0

Having convincingly disposed of south Canberra Rugby heavyweights Royals last week, the Radford juggernaut then continued its quest for Division 2 silverware away from home against a rather fancied Daramalan College.

Led onto the field – and then magnificently for the next 70 minutes – by engine room skipper Hamish Baird, the Radford lads engaged in what might be best described as a war of attrition in a tense, inch-by-inch search for territory on a heavy, unmown pitch. A great test of Radford’s lighter forward pack, it certainly was.

Inspired by the usual helpful contributions from the sideline (“any danger of keeping them on side, Sir?”, a favourite) our lads, every single one in this eclectic squad of rowers, footballers and intellectuals, defended bravely against each Daramalan raid, ones often featuring rampant forwards masquerading as fleet-footed outside backs.

0 – 0 after a physical first half. No quarter asked, none given. In the huddle, Coach Thiessen is hatching a clever plan with the leadership group, aided by modern-day red cordial, a bucket of Dencorub and a kilometre of strapping tape.

Whatever the plan was, the outcome was an organised, strategically scrappy Radford fully committed to playing the second half in the Daramalan half and building pressure. Results then materialised with the help of Radford’s champion flanker, Jake Schemen-Rogers, leading the (bone-crunching) tackle count to repeatedly stop advances through the middle, a job brilliantly supported by Harry Ward and Campbell Kruger to set the standard.

And sure enough, the cracks appeared. With Daramalan crabbing dangerously across field, enter Leaping Leo Jennett in his debut match to effect a crucial tackle and secure possession. Some deft passing followed from one of our tremendous on-field leaders in half-back Ben Heatley, through slick hands including from season debutant Miles Daly ... a try was within reach.

When it mattered most, it was the Captain who stood tall to seize the only real opportunity of the match. Hamish gathered the ball and launched himself like an Exocet missile at the try-line to score a few metres in from the corner post. He was not going to be denied. Five points soon became seven when Oli completed an excellent passage of play with a fine conversion from a difficult spot. Cunning as a fox, that Oli.

It was the longest 35 minutes of football many could recall. It felt more like 36.

Congratulations on an excellent victory, and especially for the impressive spirit in which the game was played.

More armchair athleticism to come...
