ASC GIRLS AND BOYS BASKETBALL
During Week 6 and 7, Radford competed in the annual ASC Boys and Girls basketball gala day, where we field Years 7/8, Years 9/10 and Years 11/12 teams.

Years 11/12 Boys Team

Written by Stuart Street, Year 11

With Marist being the pre-tournament favourites, we knew that the first-round game against them was going to be a challenge. It was an outstanding game by Radford, going down by a close 9 points, giving all players high spirits and confidence for the next few games.

Our second game was against Daramalan. It was not as easy as the team had hoped, resulting in a second loss for the day. Rounding the competition out, we played Canberra Grammar. Another challenging yet hard-fought game. Well done to all the players who took part.

Years 9/10 Boys Team

Written by Jeffrey Pei, Year 9

Our first game was against Marist, arguably the strongest school team in Canberra. We came out strongly and played good basketball. We made a good early run in the game to take a 6-point lead. By the end of the half however, we were down by one.

The second half was a scramble, and eventually the game wound down with us up by three after Ollie hit a tough 3-point shot. With a few seconds left in the game, Marist brought the ball up and found a shooter in the corner. With Dom frantically closing out to disturb the shot, the Marist player sank the three. The game was drawn but despite the shocked looks on our faces after the final sequence, we had played a great game.

Our second game was played against Daramalan. Despite a good fight from the Daramalan squad, we won and advanced to the semi-final. In the semi-finals we played CGS, who had placed first in the opposing pool. After a great start and an 8-point lead, a monumental defensive sequence from CGS flipped the tables, providing them with the lead. The huge momentum swing had pushed CGS into the lead position in the game, and we ended up going down.

Our day did end on a high, though, as we cheered on the Years 7/8 Radford team, who took home the victory against Marist in their final.

Years 7/8 Boys Team

In Game 1, Radford played the formidable Burgmann School. The Burgmann team consisted of some strong perimeter shooters, and a strong centre. Radford led from ball up.

Game 2 proved to be too much for Radford, going down to Marist. Marist had excellent shooters and a tall power forward who repeatedly broke Radford’s defence.

In Game 3, Radford played against John Paul II College and were too strong. With two wins and a loss, Radford were into the Semi-Finals against Daramalan. Radford worked collectively at shutting down Daramalan’s shooters, resulting in a win and a place in the Grand Final.

The grand final was a re-match of Radford v Marist. The Years 7/8 boys had buttoned-up their defensive issues and were able to battle Marist. Marist’s perimeter shooters out-scored Radford in the first half. The Radford team attacked the second half with renewed vigour. With solid defensive work and powerful offensive shooting, the Radford 7/8 team was able to claw back to within one point. In the final minute of play, Radford converted to be up by one. Marist with the ball, Radford pushed hard and was able to get a steal and hold the ball for the remaining seconds to seal the match.

All ASC Boys burst onto the court for the momentous win over Marist. Well done, Year 7 and Year 8 ASC Boys.

A huge shout out also goes to Lachlan Horrobin for being the Radford referee for the competition.

U16 & 18 GIRLS FOOTBALL SEMI-FINALS
Congratulations and good luck to the U18 Girls Football team who will be playing in the grand final on Saturday 10 September, 2:00pm kick-off, at Kambah (Kett Street). The team finished the season undefeated and even won their semi-final 11–0!

The U16 Girls Division 1 team was unlucky not to progress to the grand final, after being defeated 4–3 in penalties in their semi-final. Credit to the girls who pulled back from being 2–0 down, including Claudia Moran’s goal from halfway to level the scores!

GYMNASTICS ACHIEVEMENTS
On Sunday 28 August a group of Radford girls competed at the ACT Women's Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) state levels Grading Competition. It was a successful event for the WAG senior state girls at Canberra City Gymnastics Club (CCGC), with Level 7 placing 2nd, and Levels 8–10 placing 1st in the Team event. While all athletes compete in all WAG apparatuses (Vault, Beam, Bars and Floor), highlights include:

  • Mischa Pauza (Level 8) – 4th Bars, 7th Overall
  • Sofia Gouy (Level 9) – 6th Beam, 7th Overall
  • Chloe Mailler (Level 9) – 1st Beam, 4th Bars, 2nd Overall
  • Charlotte Taylor (Level 9) – 1st Floor, 3rd Bars, 4th Overall
  • Renee Marks (Level 10) – 2nd Bars, 3rd Beam, 2nd Overall

Renee made an amazing comeback after falling and injuring her elbow in her bars warmup. Not knowing if she would finish the competition, her resilience and determination did not go unnoticed, and she received encouragement from not only her team mates, but athletes from other clubs. Renee is set to represent CCGC at the National Clubs Carnival Competition in the Gold Coast later this year.

Lucy Prime also acted in a coaching role due to an ongoing injury which prevented her from competing. A special mention to Priya Rathod who competed in the Junior State Competition and did exceptionally well too!
