Student’s design chosen for new intranet and parent portal

Year 11 student Tom Hundy has designed the branding for the new College staff and student intranet and parent portal, Nexus.

The intranet and parent portal will replace Radford Online and is due to be launched to parents and caregivers in late Term 3 or early Term 4. It will provide the information parents and caregivers need about students’ engagement with school activities. An app will also be introduced to easily access the information within Nexus on mobile devices.

A pilot group of students, staff and parents have been testing Nexus, and the implementation team has been tweaking the configuration of the platform based on their feedback.

Students were invited to submit designs for the intranet and parent portal and Tom’s design was chosen by members of the College’s Senior Executive.

Tom said his design process, learnt throughout his time at Radford, involved researching, developing and consolidating. He explored the origins of the word nexus to understand its meaning in relation to Radford College and began to brainstorm symbols to represent the idea of connectedness. He narrowed some simple concepts down to two designs, one of which was selected for refinement to become the chosen branding and logo.

“In the design, I aimed to capture a sense of connectedness to reflect the idea of nexus and connect the concept to Radford College. I hope that many are pleased with the design, and I am very excited to see it in action.”

Tom said he was overjoyed when he found out that his concept had been chosen as the final design.

“It means a lot to me to have my work and skills put on display on such a large scale. I am so grateful to all the Radford staff who considered my design. It is definitely a highlight of my time at Radford as I got to do something I enjoy, whilst leaving a lasting impact on the school.”

Having already seen his design and graphics skills result in real-world experience, Tom said he is interested in pursuing further study and work in this area.

“Design has always been one of my main interests and I would like to pursue it professionally in some shape or form. I would like to explore a field relating to either architecture, engineering or graphic design, as I have always enjoyed finding design solutions to problems in the modern world.”
