Shaping our future together
Share this articleBy Mr Christopher Bradbury, Principal
As the vibrant energy of Term 1 transitions into the focused engagement of Term 2, I would like to address a topic of paramount importance to the future of Radford College: our strategic planning process. This is not simply an administrative exercise—it is a collaborative journey that will shape our vision for the years ahead. It builds on the strong foundations that define a Radford education and ensures we continue to thrive as a leading educational institution.
Since joining the Radford community, I have been deeply impressed by the dedication of our staff, the enthusiasm of our students and the strong support of our parents. I have witnessed firsthand the commitment to academic excellence, the richness of our holistic educational offerings, the profound impact of our service initiatives, the empowering development of leadership and our dedication to fostering global citizenship. These are the cornerstones of a Radford education, and they are the very elements we seek to strengthen and enhance through this strategic planning process.
Strategic planning is, at its core, about thoughtful reflection and purposeful action. It provides us with the opportunity to examine our current strengths, identify areas for growth and articulate a clear and compelling vision for the future of Radford College. In a rapidly evolving educational landscape, it is crucial that we proactively consider both the challenges and opportunities ahead to remain at the forefront of delivering an exceptional and relevant education for our students.
This process will involve a comprehensive review of all aspects of College life—from our academic programs and co-curricular offerings, to our facilities, community engagement and commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.
As communicated through Nexus yesterday, all our families will be invited to complete a comprehensive survey conducted by MMG Education. The strength and authenticity of our strategic plan will depend on the active participation and thoughtful contributions of our entire community. Your perspectives—as students, parents, staff and collegians—are invaluable. You bring a wealth of experience, insight and aspiration to Radford College, and it is essential that these voices are heard and considered as we chart our future course.
A good school focuses on the whole education of the whole person—a great school assembles the ingredients of high-performance culture to deliver this education.
A great school—a school of character—identifies the ‘secret sauce’ of aspirations, a sense of kinship and pathways to success, and applies this to a culture of inspiration, challenge and support. This culture fosters both the pursuit of excellence by young people of character and a sense of belonging and engagement.
Our role in strategic planning is to promote conversations and understanding through a shared language that aligns people to purpose, purpose to strategy, strategy to operations and systems, and operations to enduring culture. For in this way, the right culture becomes the vehicle for perpetuating the desired strategy.
Shaping our future is about demonstrating how our school acts strategically—defining aspirations, building culture and extending boundaries. At the same time, this process is mission-aligned: a journey from the heart (culture, people, commitment, networks, communication, growth and development) to the head (rationale, mission, vision, values, brand and philosophy), to the shoulders (expectations, systems, structure, plans, policies, processes and protocols), to the hands (operations, curriculum, co-curriculum, initiatives, research, development, community engagement, accountability and review).
The strategic planning process is an exciting opportunity for us to shape the future of Radford College together. It is a chance to build upon our rich history, embrace innovation and ensure we continue to provide an exceptional and transformative educational experience for generations to come.
I urge you to participate actively in this process, share your valuable insights and partner with us in creating a bold and inspiring vision for the future of our remarkable school. Together, we can ensure that Radford College remains a place where students learn with passion, lead with integrity and serve with purpose—grounded in the strong foundations that define who we are.
A sense of wonder
The things we wonder about can help us grow in faith
A sense of wonder
Share this articleBy Rev. Andy Fleming, Associate Chaplain
The thing I enjoy most in Godly Play is hearing the students share their wonderings. The simple phrase "I wonder..." underpins the inquiry process across all subject areas.
In my former role as a Health and Physical Education (HPE) teacher, I recall shifting from an explicit teaching model to an inquiry-based approach when teaching golf. Rather than using the traditional instructional method of modelling and copying, I handed students a club and a ball and said, “You have four weeks to explain to me what makes a golf swing ‘successful.’” In essence, I was asking them, “I wonder if you can figure out how to best hit a golf ball?”
This style of inquiry has helped me cultivate a deeper sense of wonder myself—especially when I read the Bible. The Easter season offers many opportunities for wondering. For example, when reading John’s resurrection account, we not only wonder at the mystery of the resurrection, but we also witness the wonderings of Mary Magdalene at the tomb and of Peter and John as they race to see what has happened.
There is much to ponder in the “empty spaces”—those moments where no clear explanation is given. One such space is found in the experience of the apostle Thomas, often, and perhaps unfairly, labelled 'Doubting Thomas.'
Thomas is absent when Jesus first appears to the other disciples. We’re not told why. Had he slept in that morning? Had he withdrawn to process his grief? Was he simply running an errand? We’re left to wonder.
When the other disciples tell Thomas that Jesus has risen, he famously replies:
"Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe." – John 20:25
It is another week before Thomas sees Jesus. We might wonder what was going through his mind during that time. Unlike us, Thomas didn’t have the benefit of modern tools or widespread evidence to ease his doubt—only the testimony of his friends. I imagine many conversations took place that week about seeing Jesus and how the disciples were responding to his call to receive the Holy Spirit. Thomas must have spent that time wondering deeply about their experience.
When Jesus finally appears to Thomas, his wondering ceases. The truth stands before him.
Our wonderings lead us to search for truth and help us move forward in faith. Like Thomas, we too experience moments of uncertainty that can shape and strengthen our belief. According to tradition, Thomas’ faith eventually took him to India, where he shared the good news of the risen Christ.
May our own wonderings—especially in moments of doubt or confusion—draw us closer to truth, to faith and to God.
Go in peace,
Rev. Andy

Honouring the Anzac legacy
We gathered on Monday in a spirit of remembrance
Honouring the Anzac legacy
Share this articleOn Monday morning, beneath an autumn sun, Radford College students and staff gathered to reflect on the sacrifices made by Australian and New Zealanders in the First World War. Held around the rose garden in the Turning Circle, the ANZAC service was a special occasion that marked the beginning of Term 2 and brought the College together in a spirit of remembrance.
The ceremony began with an uplifting performance of Dona Nobis Pacem by Bernstein Symphonic Wind Orchestra, setting a solemn yet hopeful tone. Radford's Cadets—representing the Air Force, Navy and Army—stood proudly in the rose garden, raising the flags and marking the occasion with a sense of tradition and duty. For these Cadets, the day was particularly significant, as they had the honour of meeting the service’s guest speaker, Brigadier Ben Slaughter, who was most recently the Australian Army Cadets Commander.
College Captains Amber Smith and Lachlan Lloyd offered a warm welcome to everyone in attendance, while Junior School students Emmee Rock and Edison Talbot gave an acknowledgment of country, which was also signed in Auslan.
Principal Mr Christopher Bradbury’s address was a reflective moment for all present. Speaking on the 110th anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign, he noted how the Anzac spirit of resilience and unity continues to resonate today. “It is crucial to consider the enduring lessons that Gallipoli holds for us today,” he said, emphasising the importance of resilience in the face of adversity. He reminded the students that, like the soldiers of Gallipoli who persevered through unimaginable challenges, they too would face setbacks in life. But just as those soldiers demonstrated, they too must rise above.
Mr Bradbury further spoke of the spirit of mateship—the bonds forged in the trenches of Gallipoli—which remain vital in building a compassionate and supportive society. “In our own community, we are stronger when we support each other, when we embrace our diversity and when we work together towards common goals,” he said.
The momentous occasion was made even more significant by the presence of Brigadier Ben Slaughter, who shared his own experiences as a career officer in the Australian Army, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Reflecting on the Anzacs, he spoke of the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought at Gallipoli, particularly noting the poignant story of Jim Martin, the youngest known Australian Anzac. Jim, only 14 years old when he enlisted, tragically died of typhoid fever at Gallipoli before reaching his 15th birthday. His story serves as a stark reminder of the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for their country.
As the service continued, the College community observed a minute’s silence. The Last Post, played by Director of Bands Mr Ben Marston, providing a fitting tribute to those who had fallen.
Wreaths were laid by Vice-Captains Jeb Jeffery and Anvi Gupta, as well as Junior School students Catherine Beggs and Will Titley. Senior Chaplain, Rev. Dr Katherine Rainger, offered a prayer and blessing for peace, while Charlotte Knight and Paige Le Lievre sang the New Zealand (in Māori and English) and Australian national anthems.
The service concluded with the solemn recitation of The Ode by Acting Deputy Principal and Head of Secondary School, Mrs Louise Wallace-Richards:
“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."

Round Square Big Baraza
Students find their voice at the gathering in Oxford
Round Square Big Baraza
Share this articleBy Ms Kath Notley, Round Square Coordinator
During the term break, 16 Radford students from Years 10 to 12, along with Mr Jeremy Hawkes and myself, embarked on an unforgettable journey to Oxford, UK to join students from 50 schools around the globe for the ‘Round Square Big Baraza’. For this bespoke international gathering of Round Square schools, our students were accommodated at either Exeter College or St Anne’s College—an extraordinary experience that allowed them to live, study and dine within iconic and historic settings.
To help students adjust quickly and minimise the effects of jet lag, we headed straight outdoors upon our arrival in London and made the most of the glorious sunshine. We hit the ground running—quite literally—covering many of the city's iconic landmarks, from Big Ben to Buckingham Palace.
The students showed great stamina and enthusiasm, keeping pace throughout the day without complaint. Our walking tour concluded with a moving Evensong service at Westminster Abbey, where we were recognised as the 'Australian School Group' and given the opportunity to sit in the choir stalls—a welcome chance to rest after clocking more than 24,000 steps.
At the Round Square event in Oxford, students undertook a wealth of experiences designed to challenge and inspire. Some of the highlights included:
- Engaging in formal debates in the renowned Oxford Union Debate Chamber.
- Listening to powerful keynote presentations from students across the globe.
- Participating in ceremonial events at the iconic Sheldonian Theatre.
- Dressing up and dancing the night away at a Regency Ball inside Oxford Town Hall.
- Solving clues during an Alice in Wonderland-themed treasure hunt.
- Touring the historic Christ Church College.
- Experiencing the quintessential Oxford pastime of punting along the river.
Radford student performance highlights included Kevin Wong’s stirring piano performance at the Opening Ceremony, Thenuki Weerabaddana Dissanayake’s moving keynote on refugees and Tiasha Perera’s articulate summation at the Closing Ceremony.
Our students shone throughout the event. They demonstrated exceptional debating skills, delivering passionate and well-articulated arguments that established them as formidable speakers. The debate format encouraged active audience participation, and it was a regular occurrence to see Radford students posing pertinent and direct questions to the teams in debate. I commend our debate champions: Erica Li, Anika Chaturvedi, Kavin Panagoda, Emma Huang and Ben Wang on their achievements and all of the Radford participants for their outstanding contributions to the debates.
Additionally, three of our students led mixed groups of international participants in preparing for debates and discussing pressing global issues—an experience that deepened their leadership and collaboration skills. Tahlia Hunt, Joey Lee and Ankith Atluri were all impressive in their roles.
A small group of international students were selected to be part of a film crew, receiving professional training and support to document the event. Radford Year 12 student Sofia O’Brien was chosen as part of this team and played an integral role in producing the three daily highlight videos that were published to Round Square's social media, and the final event film, which can be viewed here.
The true value of the event lay in the meaningful dialogues our students engaged in. They explored global issues, exchanged diverse perspectives and developed the confidence and communication skills to express their views with clarity and respect. These conversations fostered a deeper understanding of the world and highlighted the importance of global citizenship—skills and insights our students will carry with them for years to come.
In addition to all these experiences, students formed lasting friendships with peers from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, adding a deeply personal and human dimension to their global learning. The Oxford experience served as a powerful reminder of the value of connection, dialogue and shared exploration in shaping young global citizens.
As a final note, in the lead-up to the event, students had the opportunity to hear from Terry Yang, Radford's 2023 BSSS Dux, who attended a Round Square conference in Oxford in Year 11. Now studying at the very college where he once stayed as a delegate, Terry’s journey served as a source of inspiration. I look forward to seeing which of our current students may one day follow in his footsteps.

Since its inception, Radford College's purpose has always been "to build a school which strives for excellence without elitism, and a school where there is care for every individual and where there is genuine pride in achievement but never arrogance." These are the words of Founding Principal Jock Mackinnon.
He understood that one way to ensure there was genuine care for every student was to complement what occurred in the classroom with opportunities to build connections outside of it.
Radford College's co-curricular program is a vital component of a well-rounded education. It complements academic learning by providing students with opportunities to explore interests, develop skills and engage in activities that enhance their personal growth alongside their teachers. The role of Director of Student Experiences oversees and develops our co-curricular program, outdoor education program and provides oversight of national and international trips and tours.
Our co-curricular and outdoor education programs are integral to the overall educational experience at Radford, promoting personal, academic and social development. They provide students with opportunities to learn beyond the classroom, build essential life skills and prepare for future academic and career paths.
By encouraging participation in a range of activities, we help create well-rounded individuals who are not only academically capable but also emotionally intelligent, socially responsible and prepared for success in a complex world. There are a multitude of experiences on offer for our students to embrace. I encourage them to get out there and explore them.

Following her outstanding performances at the 2024 Australian Rowing Championships in Tasmania this March—where she claimed three gold medals in para events and contributed to the Girls’ Senior 1st Quad qualifying for the A Final—Year 11 student Isobel Egan was invited to the National Rowing Team Selection Trials in Penrith during the school holidays.
Her unbeaten streak at the nationals, along with decisive wins at the trials, impressed selectors and secured her a place on the Australian Rowing Team for the upcoming U23 World Rowing Championships in Poznań, Poland. Isobel will compete in the PR3 Women’s Single Scull, a para-rowing event that is making its debut at the U23 World Championships in July.
Before heading to Poland, Isobel will also join Rowing Australia’s Para Rowing Team on a European tour, competing at the International Para Rowing Regatta in Paris, France, in June.
She will be accompanied by Radford College Senior Girls’ Rowing Coach Max Meyer, who has also been selected for the U23 Australian Coaching Team and will support her throughout the tour and regattas.
We extend our warmest congratulations to both Isobel and Max on their incredible achievements and wish them all the very best as they represent Radford College and Australia on the international stage.

After a nail-biting, two-week wait, the results for the Bishop’s Cup and Spirit Cup were finally announced this week, recognising the incredible efforts of students across a diverse range of activities.
This year’s Foundation Day, held on the last day of Term 1, continued the tradition of offering a wide variety of events, ensuring that every student had the opportunity to contribute to their House in a way that reflected their individual passions and strengths.
Students could compete in physical activities such as touch football, AFL and badminton, allowing our athletes to shine on the field and court. For students with a passion for the arts, a new art and design competition was introduced this year, offering a creative outlet and showcasing the incredible talent within our community. The rhythmic energy of the dance competition brought music, movement and vibrant spirit to the day, while the strategic minds of our students were put to the test in the ever-popular chess tournament.
This variety of activities truly captured the spirit of Foundation Day—one in which every student could play their part, whether through physical prowess, artistic creativity, strategic thinking or performance.
The competition across the Houses was exceptionally close this year, with only a handful of points separating each House by the end of the day. The final standings for the Bishop’s Cup, which recognises overall achievement across all events, were as follows:
- 1st place – Banksia
- 2nd place – Acacia
- 3rd place – Jarrah
- 4th place – Boronia
- 5th place – Kurrajong
- 6th place – Karri
- 7th place – Wandoo
- 8th place – Huon
For the Spirit Cup, awarded for outstanding House spirit, encouragement and participation, the results were:
- 1st place – Karri
- 2nd place – Boronia
- 3rd place – Banksia
- 4th place – Jarrah
- 5th place – Acacia
- 6th place – Kurrajong
- 7th place – Huon
- 8th place – Wandoo
Congratulations to Banksia on winning the Bishop’s Cup and to Karri for winning the Spirit Cup! Every House should be incredibly proud of their achievements and the way they represented themselves and their Houses on the day.
Thank you to all students, staff and House leaders who made the day such a success. We are already looking forward to an even bigger and better Foundation Day next year!
Junior School celebrates Foundation Day
Celebrating 41 years of Radford College
Junior School celebrates Foundation Day
Share this articleBy Ms Tracey Markovic, Assistant Head of Junior School Operations
Foundation Day is always a special occasion in the life of Radford College, marking the anniversary of the laying of our Foundation Stone.
Each year, on the last day of Term 1, Junior and Secondary School staff and students come together to celebrate our rich story and the core values that continue to guide us: Truth, Compassion and Wisdom.
This year was no different. Everyone was delighted to gather at the beginning of the day as a whole College for The Telling – The Story of Yungaballi – a service led by our students. It was a time to reflect, give thanks and celebrate the vibrant and caring community that makes Radford so special.
After our Foundation Day service, Junior School students continued their celebrations with a variety of enjoyable House-based activities. These activities were thoughtfully facilitated by our House leaders and staff, creating wonderful opportunities for students of all ages to work together, have fun and strengthen their sense of belonging. There was a buzz of energy and excitement as students participated in team challenges and creative games that truly captured our community spirit. The Star Relay was the highlight of the afternoon for our Year 3—6 students!
A particularly special part of the day was when every student in the Junior School planted a daffodil bulb in the College grounds. This tradition has been part of our Foundation Day activities for the past seven years.
Our Year 5 and 6 students spent time planting alongside their Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten buddies, offering guidance and friendship. Other year levels also worked closely with their friends, demonstrating collaboration, care and community spirit.
These daffodil bulbs will bloom in spring, serving as a beautiful and lasting symbol of growth, renewal and the way our student community came together in unity on Foundation Day. Just as these bulbs will flourish with care and time, so too will the connections and spirit of our College community.
Foundation Day 2025 was a wonderful reminder of the strength, joy and connection we share, and we thank everyone who contributed to making it such a memorable celebration.

- If a Radford student is selected in a SSACT representative team, it is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to follow the normal College absence processes.
SSACT Scholarship Fund
The SSACT Scholarship Fund is once again open and available for students who have been selected in a SSACT representative team and is required to travel interstate to compete at the respective School Sport Australia National Championships.
More information on the Scholarship Fund and its consideration criteria, can be found within the Resources section of the SSACT website homepage, SSACT Scholarship Fund Information and Application
Successful applicants will receive a $500 deduction from their team fees during the payment phase of the team preparation process. The approval process can be quite quick once the student is selected and one of the criteria is deemed as a 'Circumstantial Hardship' e.g. multiple children from the same family making teams in a close timeframe.
Scholarship applications are to be submitted to eo@schoolsportact.org.au.
