Year 7 and 8 visual arts students recently had the opportunity to delve into the world of Indigenous Australian art at the National Gallery of Australia, where they explored the exhibitions of Vincent Namatjira, Australia in colour and the work of Emily Kam Kngwarray.

Firstly, the students were introduced to the compelling work of Vincent Namatjira, whose contemporary art pieces provide insightful commentary on Australia’s history and current affairs. Namatjira’s unique approach to storytelling through art resonated with the students, offering them a modern perspective on Indigenous narratives.

The journey continued with a stunning exhibition of Emily Kam Kngwarray's work, whose abstract expressions capture the essence of her connection to the land. Her vibrant use of colour and form allowed students to experience the spiritual and cultural depth of Indigenous art, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of its significance.

This excursion represented more than just an academic outing; it was a reconnection with the invaluable practice of experiential learning that had been greatly missed since the pandemic. The visit to the National Gallery not only enriched the students’ understanding of art but also reignited their enthusiasm for exploring cultural heritage firsthand. It underscored the importance of direct engagement with artworks to fully appreciate their context and significance.
