A time to be proud

When I drive through the gate every day, I reflect on how working at Radford is more than a job. To teach and to work with young people is a calling that is spiritually fulfilling and rewarding. One of my favourite sayings is ‘choosing to be a teacher has given me far more than I have given it.’ Our College culture is incredibly important, and we feel blessed to be surrounded and supported by the love of our extended Radford family.
At the Gala Ball on Saturday night, it was touching to hear so much positive feedback from the many parents and staff in attendance. In our 40th year, watching people talk so positively about our community and our culture made me feel incredibly proud. We are all custodians of this culture and for so many people to embrace the opportunity to celebrate it, made for many special moments.
Our mission is always to lift Radford’s team spirit, its esprit de corps. We seek to do this by reviving the importance of our Ethos Statement.
Our ethos begins with the word “Respect” using the Radford “R” to emphasise how central respect is to our identity.
Our ethos also incorporates our values of truth, compassion and wisdom.
We are then all urged to walk those values in three important ways, to see again, listen deeply and act with kindness.
We deliberately wanted this ethos at the core of our daily life at the College, which is why you’ll see it on the banner at the very top of Nexus each time you open it. We want everyone in the Radford family to understand the fundamental character and spirit of our ethos and our culture. This is who we are.
Friday’s official opening of the Collegians Centre and 40th Foundation Day Service will be incredibly special. There are moments in the life of our College when we celebrate the infinite joy of being together and this day will be one of those occasions.
Much hard work has gone into preparations for this milestone, and we want to take this opportunity to thank the students and the high-performing teams across the College that have worked incredibly hard to bring it all together.
I wish all of our families a joyful, safe and relaxing holiday and I look forward to seeing you all back on campus for the start of Term 2.
Go well and lead well.
Andy
The significance of 40

The significance of 40
Share this articleBy Rev. Andy Fleming, Chaplain
As you are no doubt aware, we are in the middle of a massive week as our community celebrates 40 years. Last weekend, the 40th Gala Ball was enjoyed. Tonight, the 40th Gala Foundation Concert is being held. On Friday, a special Foundation Day will be taking place as Bishop Mark Short will officially open the Collegians Centre in front of all students, staff and guests.
I like how the week culminates in the Collegian Centre's opening – representing all who have been a part of the Radford’s community over time. These events provide us with the opportunity to reflect on the school’s journey and transformation over the 40 years, while also casting minds forward to the school’s future and all the possibilities yet to come.
These notions of reflection mirror the significance of the number 40 in the Bible.
40 appears over 150 times in the Bible and signifies new beginnings and opportunities, transformation, how things can change and how great things are achieved by individuals and communities.
Throughout the Old Testament and the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ ministry the number 40 appears as a significant marker of time. In the Old Testament, we all know about the great rains that lasted 40 days and nights and Noah building the ark. There is also famously Moses leading the Israelites from Egypt into the wilderness for 40 years to gain their freedom. 40 was indeed significant for Moses. He fasted for 40 days and nights in preparation to receive the Law from God, and then also stayed on Mount Sinai for another 40 days to receive the Law.
For Jesus, he spent 40 days in the wilderness preparing for his ministry, and after his resurrection, before ascending to heaven he stayed on earth for another . . . you guessed it, 40 days.
In our Christian calendar, the period of Lent, the time to prepare for the mystery of Easter, is 40 days. In biblical terms, whenever the number 40 appears if suggests something meaningful. Be that individual reflection or self-examination, repentance, preparation for a task and realising personal contentment, to building and renewing spirituality.
As we enjoy Radford’s 40th year, I pray that our community will remain a welcoming and inclusive one, while continuing to grow and enhance the opportunities for all who come here.
A Celtic blessing for our school:
Bless this school and those within.
Bless our giving and receiving.
Bless our words and conversation.
Bless our hands and recreation.
Bless our sowing and our growing.
Bless our coming and our going.
Bless all who enter and depart.
Bless this school, your peace impart.
Go in peace,
Rev. Andy

Radford Reaches Out Rainbow Day
Share this articleRev. Dr Katherine Rainger, Senior Chaplain
Last Friday students in the Secondary School created a display of rainbow colour as we greeted the rain with a rainbow! The purpose of the day was to raise some much-needed funds for St John’s Care.
Radford College has had a long partnership with St John’s Care as we support them as they provide emergency relief and pathways to long term solutions for vulnerable and marginalised people in the Canberra community. Radford students participate in pantry appeals, volunteering on site, and serving and playing music at their community lunches.
Service prefects Will Pak Poy and Laura Castle interviewed Mr Jason Haines from St John’s Care at Week 9’s assembly. We heard some of Jason’s story about the people in his life who had influenced him to think about the needs of those around him. We heard about the resilience that people who come to St John’s Care demonstrate each day. St John’s Care is busier than ever, and any help is gratefully received.
Secondary students donated a gold coin and then had the opportunity to purchase rainbow decorated ice cream served by students in Radford Awareness and Service (RAS) and fairy floss expertly crafted by Design and Technology teacher Mr Neil Craven.
We look forward to reporting back the results of our fundraising efforts next term. To donate to Radford Reaches Out click here.

Hispanic Day 2024
A huge success, or, un gran éxito!
Hispanic Day 2024
Share this articleBy Mrs Sophie Manoharan, Specialist Teacher
Hispanic Day strengthens our relationship with Spanish speaking embassies and provides our students with a fun way to connect with the Spanish culture and language. Hispanic Day 2024 was no exception and featured a lively festival showcasing the rich heritage of ten embassies. Sessions of Latin dance, led by Becky Fleming, owner of Kokoloco dance studio in Canberra, and traditional games like El Tejo, organised by Señor César Alvarez from Colombia, have been a wonderful addition to this year’s celebration.
The day started with members of the College Executives, Spanish staff and Year 6 students gathering in the Collegians Centre to welcome the ten embassies, a Colombian parent and the owner of the Kokoloco dance studio. In appreciation for their cultural contributions, the entire primary school united in song, echoing Un mundo verde by Mister G.
The decorations in the foyer of the Radford College Junior school set the tone with the Amazon’s lush greeneries as well as the 21 Hispanic flags. Embracing this year environment theme, the students adorned themselves in green, symbolising their commitment to creating a sustainable world.
Following the ceremony, students from Year 3 to Year 6 engaged in two sets of 30-minute activities in the Junior space, while Kindergarten to Year 2 students participated in dance and traditional games. Across all age groups, Spanish language exposure took various forms – games, traditional dance, art and percussion – fostering interactions with the participants.
Thanks to the enthusiastic participation of representatives from Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, El Salvador, Spain and Uruguay, as well as the dynamic energy of Becky from Kokoloco and Señor Alvarez from Colombia, Hispanic Day 2024 has once again been a resounding success.
Special mention goes to the Radford College Canteen for spicing up the festivities with a Hispanic-themed menu. Thank you to the dedicated staff, Specialist team and Facilities team whose unwavering support and flexibility made the day truly exceptional.
We hope that our students carried home a kaleidoscope of colours, words, games and knowledge, enriching their understanding of Hispanic culture. Until we meet again in 2025 - ¡ Hasta el próximo año! (See you next year!).

Week 9 saw the Year 9 and 10 and Year 4 ACT School Futsal Titles. The Year 9 and 10 boys were unlucky to miss out on finals in a tough pool with only 5 players, and the Year 9 and 10 girls were also unlucky to be defeated in the quarter finals, playing some stylish Futsal throughout the day.
With over 20 teams in the Year 4 girls' tournament, the girls blitzed the group stage but unfortunately went down 1–0 in a tough semi-final. The Year 4 Boys tournament had over 50 teams and after being undefeated in four group games, proceeding through a nail-biting penalty shoot-out in the quarter finals and a comfortable win in the semi-final, the boys were crowned Champions after another penalty shoot-out in the grand final. Most importantly the students should be commended on their behaviour and sporting ethics displayed throughout the day.
The Year 4 boys join the Year 8 boys in qualifying for the National tournament to be held in Brisbane in November.

NGA visit
The spiritual and cultural depth of Indigenous art
NGA visit
Share this articleBy Ms Dimity Kidston, Acting Head of Creative Arts
Year 7 and 8 visual arts students recently had the opportunity to delve into the world of Indigenous Australian art at the National Gallery of Australia, where they explored the exhibitions of Vincent Namatjira, Australia in colour and the work of Emily Kam Kngwarray.
Firstly, the students were introduced to the compelling work of Vincent Namatjira, whose contemporary art pieces provide insightful commentary on Australia’s history and current affairs. Namatjira’s unique approach to storytelling through art resonated with the students, offering them a modern perspective on Indigenous narratives.
The journey continued with a stunning exhibition of Emily Kam Kngwarray's work, whose abstract expressions capture the essence of her connection to the land. Her vibrant use of colour and form allowed students to experience the spiritual and cultural depth of Indigenous art, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of its significance.
This excursion represented more than just an academic outing; it was a reconnection with the invaluable practice of experiential learning that had been greatly missed since the pandemic. The visit to the National Gallery not only enriched the students’ understanding of art but also reignited their enthusiasm for exploring cultural heritage firsthand. It underscored the importance of direct engagement with artworks to fully appreciate their context and significance.

Radford students play their part at the "National"
Folk Festival fundamentals

After the success of the 2023 Technical Theatre, the National Folk Festival welcomed us back to help on the Venue and Stage Management team for this year event.
Ten students headed out to EPIC on the last Thursday of March with Mr Nick Akhurst to help set up various venues and help with the concert on the opening night. The "National", as it is known by those who love it, had over 14 venues, 1170 performers and 140 acts.
It takes hundreds of volunteers to keep this festival running, with over 70 people working as venue and stage managers.
The students were fortunate to work with a number of professional event and theatre people, who were willing to share their experience with them. Among these were Collegians John Nicolls and Bill Bruce.
It was great for our students to see the impact that both theatre and volunteering can have on your life. As Bill explained, his work at the National helped him gain work in other fields as he was able to demonstrate his ability to manage large projects and a significant number of staff through his volunteer work.
Thursday was a long day setting up, and three intrepid students stayed late on the opening night and learned valuable skills in venue and patron management along with problem solving. A number were able to return on the Monday and then help close out the festival.
I would like to thank both Lucy Crawford and Sami Cain, the venue and stage management coordinators for allowing us to share their wealth of knowledge and giving the students a chance to experience the excitement of working on a festival of this scale.

Children of the Black Skirt

The Radford Theatre Company presents their first production of the year, Children of the Black Skirt.
Three lost children discover an abandoned orphanage in the bush and become trapped in a timeless world, haunted by spirits of the past and tormented by the ominous Black Skirt, a cruel governess harbouring a mysterious past. The children begin to listen to the stories of the restless spirits of other children who have passed through the orphanage, and by doing so release the spirits from the tragedies of their pasts.
This new gothic fairy tale for young people tells a history of Australia through the eyes of children from convict times, the Stolen Generations, World War II and beyond. An evocative play exploring the themes of history, reconciliation and the power of storytelling – this is Roald Dahl meets Charles Dickens under the harsh Australian sun.
Directed by Sally Stenning this work is a combined curriculum and cocurricular production demonstrating the acting and production skills of our students.

The Radford College Foundation are excited to announce a special drawing competition open to all Junior school students at Radford College. This competition aims to celebrate the spirit of giving and provide our young artists with an opportunity to express their creativity while spreading gratitude and kindness.
To think about and draw: "The Art of Giving”
We invite all students in Junior School to create a drawing that represents their understanding of the word "giving." We encourage students to think about acts of kindness, generosity, and the joy of helping others. Whether it's sharing toys, offering a helping hand, or making someone smile, let their imaginations soar as they explore the concept of giving through their artwork.
The top drawings will be selected by representatives of the Radford College Foundation Board to put on special thank you cards that will be used to express our appreciation to the valued supporters and donors who have contributed to the College. It's a wonderful opportunity for your child's artwork to be showcased and make a positive impact within our community.
Competition Guidelines
- Eligibility: The competition is open to all students in the Junior School.
- Artwork Requirements: Drawings should be created on standard sized paper (A4 or A5 preferred) using any medium (crayons, markers, coloured pencils, etc.). Please ensure the artwork is colourful, clear, and reflects the thought of Giving.
- Submission: Submit the drawings to foundation@radford.act.edu.au by Friday 26 April. Please include the student's name, grade, and contact information (parent or guardian's name, email, and phone number) with the submission.
- Multiple Entries: Each student can submit only one drawing.
- Judging Criteria: Drawings will be evaluated based on creativity, interpretation of the theme, originality, and overall visual impact.
- Prizes: Winners will receive a gift voucher to the value of $50 to spend at Smiggle or Dymocks.
Important Dates
- Submission Deadline: Friday 26 April 2024
- Winners Announced: Wednesday 1 May 2024
